John was a dear friend in his final couple of years. I met him when he became the roommate of my buddy, Paul Oakes, at Southwestern Veterans Center. When the pandemic began, and I no longer could get inside to visit with the guys, John generously shared the use of his cell phone with Paul so I could speak with them two or three times every week before driving out to wave and salute them. John was a generous, exceedingly kind man who often tended to Paul, who is confined to a wheelchair. I am very saddened by the loss of a genuinely great man who helped others right up to his final day. God bless him always. - Ed Blank, Mt. Lebanon
